Every year, I re-read A Christmas Carol to put myself in the holiday mood. I confess to reading this sentence and finding myself, in horror, sympathizing with Scrooge: “It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies me constantly.” This is the impulse I must fight, unless I want to be visited by the ghosts of unhappy lawyers, whose chains consist of billable hours instead of money boxes.

Instead, I am striving to embrace Scrooge’s nephew’s point of view: this time of year is “the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely…” And so my shut-up heart is warmed and joyed at the thought of your fellowship and service through CABA. While our Christmas Party might not have been up to old Mr. Fezziwig’s standards — no one danced a reel — it was nonetheless a great success, thanks to the diligence and thoughtfulness of our Executive Director, Jane Harkins. Thanks so much to all who came and all who donated to Toys for Tots.

In this season of giving, I am grateful for all of those who give their time and talents to CABA, particularly our committee chairs and members. If you have not signed up to a committee, it is not too late! Please feel free to contact me, or Jane, or any of our board members or committee chairs if one of your New Year’s Resolutions is to be more involved. And remember that when you do, the “happiness [you] give[] is quite as great as if it cost a fortune.”
