CABA’s Spring 2020 Essay Contest

Each year the Law Related Education Committee hosts CABA’s Essay Contest for 7th & 8th graders in the Jackson area. The purpose of the essay contest is to encourage students to think about the role of law in our society. The theme of this year's essay focuses on vaping.

Essay Topic

An electronic cigarette, also known as e-cigarette among other names, is an electronic device that simulates tobacco smoking. E-cigarettes are noncombustible tobacco products. They are handheld battery-powered vaporizers. Using an e-cigarette is called "vaping". Do you think Mississippi should make vaping illegal for youth under the age of 18? If so, what are the pros and cons?

Essay Rules

  1. Essays must be typed and consist of 500 words or less.
  2. Essays will be judged on the following criteria: (1) Form and (2) Analysis. Form includes spelling, grammar, sentence structure, paragraph transition, and formatting. Analysis includes demonstrated understanding of the issue, appreciation of both sides of an argument, logic and reasoning, nature of argument, presentation of facts to support reasoning and conclusion.
  3. All essays must be submitted with a completed cover sheet and delivered via e-mail or postmarked by Friday, April 24, 2020.
  4. Please do not put your name on your essay. Your name and school or organization should only appear on your cover sheet.

Prizes

Authors of the top essay from each school will receive a cash prize of $100. The Overall Winner, selected out of all the essays submitted, will receive a cash prize of $150. The teacher with the most students to submit essays in the contest will win a $100 gift card for school supplies. At the organization’s request, the Law Related Education Committee will coordinate with the organizations to present these awards at each organization’s Awards Day program. Additionally, the winning authors and the teacher with the highest participation will be recognized at a Capital Area Bar Association Luncheon in June 2020. The winning essay will be posted on CABA’s website. We look forward to reading your essays!
